Supporting Mental Health During Menopause — When HRT Isn’t an Option
Menopause can be disorienting and deeply personal. But when hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not an option—due to a history of hormone-positive breast cancer, for example—it can feel even more isolating. This is part of my story. As a breast cancer survivor, I’ve faced the abrupt onset of medical menopause and all the challenges that come with it: the mood swings, the fatigue, the identity shifts, and the emotional heaviness that can sometimes cloud even the brightest days.
Mental health often becomes the unsung battle of menopause, especially for women navigating it without hormonal support. But here’s the truth: there are ways to support your emotional wellness naturally—and they matter.
We don’t need to do it alone. And while we may have to walk a slightly different path, it’s still full of opportunities to care for our minds, reconnect with our bodies, and live this season with strength and intention.

The Menopause Mind: What’s Going On with your Mental Health?
Menopause is not just a physical event—it’s a profound emotional and psychological transition. Without the option of HRT, the hormonal rollercoaster can feel more intense. Estrogen and progesterone levels plummet, and this sudden hormonal imbalance can increase the risk of anxiety, depression, irritability, and even insomnia.
For those of us who’ve had hormone-sensitive cancers, every symptom can feel amplified—not only because of the physical toll but because we’ve faced big fears, deep grief, and a fundamental reshaping of how we see our bodies.
And let’s not forget the life shifts that often happen alongside menopause:
- Careers change
- Children grow up and move on
- Parents may be aging
- Our identities, once tied to caregiving or certain roles, begin to shift
It’s a lot. No wonder mental health can take a hit.
3 Natural Ways to Support Mental Health in Menopause (Without HRT)
Whether or not you’ve faced breast cancer, these simple and gentle strategies are powerful tools to help regulate emotions, ease stress, and build resilience—all without hormone therapy.
1. Daily Self-Care Rituals
Small, intentional acts of self-care become lifelines during menopause. And they don’t have to be fancy.
💡 Actionable Step:
Build a daily ritual that nurtures your nervous system.
- Morning journaling with a warm cup of tea
- 10 minutes of stretching or deep breathing
- A quiet walk while listening to calming music
The goal is to check in with yourself each day—to see yourself, to slow down, and to remember that your emotional needs matter.
2. Community and Connection
After cancer, or during intense life changes, it’s easy to withdraw. But connection is medicine—especially for our mental health.
💡 Actionable Step:
Reach out to trusted friends, join a support group, or find an online community of women going through similar experiences.
- Cancer survivorship circles
- Menopause Facebook groups
- Local meet-ups or women’s wellness retreats
Laughter, shared stories, and emotional validation are powerful antidotes to loneliness and despair.
3. Nourish Your Brain and Body
You may not be able to rely on hormone therapy—but your diet can still be a strong ally.
💡 Actionable Step:
Focus on hormone-friendly, anti-inflammatory foods that support your mood and brain health.
- Omega-3s from salmon, walnuts, or flaxseeds
- Leafy greens, berries, and whole grains
- Reduce sugar and alcohol, which can worsen mood swings
Also, don’t underestimate hydration, balanced meals, and the impact of stable blood sugar on mental clarity and energy.
Make Your Mental Health a Priority
Without HRT, you may need to be more proactive—but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. In fact, the act of caring for yourself in this season can be incredibly empowering.
✨ Ask yourself:
What’s one small thing I can do today to support my mental health?
Maybe it’s going for a walk.
Maybe it’s turning your phone off at 9 PM.
Maybe it’s saying “no” to something so you can say “yes” to rest.
Journaling Through the Journey
One of my favorite tools for navigating menopause and medical menopause has been journaling. It helps me process big emotions, track patterns, and stay anchored. If you’d like to try, check out my Autumn Journal Prompts and Winter Journal Prompts to get started.
