I have a problem!  Yes, I have lots of problems!  But this problem refers to housecleaning…I’m a busy mom and I don’t love to clean my house…but I do like to live in a clean house!  What is the solution to my problem?   A Homemaking Routine chart! (I really love printable charts!)

I’ve been thinking about what really has to be done everyday to keep our home livable without spending hours cleaning…I don’t have hours to spend on cleaning my house every day (nor do I want to spend my time that way)!

I’ve been keeping track of what I need to do every day to keep my home running smoothly and for me to feel sane and happy!  This is what I came up with!

Morning Homemaking Routine

  • Reboot laundry (empty dryer, move clothes from the washer to the dryer, and start a new load)
  • Load and start the dishwasher (because of my husbands work schedule, we tend to eat dinner later and then move right into getting ready for bed…which can make it hard to get the dishes done at night…so I’m a rebel and often do them in the morning!)
  • Dinner prep for that night’s meal.  It’s a great time to chop veggies, get any canned ingredients out of the pantry,  and make sure any ingredients are taken out of the freezer.
  • Wipe down the island.
  • Make my bed and do a quick bedroom pick up (because my bedroom tends to turn into a dumping ground…if I do a quick tidy every morning it keeps my room from turning into a disaster area!)

Mid-day Homemaking Routine

  • Make lunch
  • Clean up the dishes from lunch.
  • 20 minute zone clean up

Dinner Time Homemaking Routine

  • Make dinner
  • Put the food away

Nope, it’s not a lot of deep cleaning…more of that happens on (most) Saturdays.  This is what I try to do on a daily basis (I don’t do laundry or zones on Sunday)

Evening Routine

My evening routine helps me make sure things are wrapped up for the day and I’m ready to start a great morning the next day.

Cleaning Rotation Chart

We all know how easy different areas of our house can get out of control!  I created this cleaning rotation chart so that I could pick one area each day to focus on…I spend just 15 minutes a day on this task…so it doesn’t take a lot of time…but when I do it consistently it makes a big difference!

  • Print the homemaking routine template and write down what you feel like you need to do each day to keep yourself sane and happy!
  • Keep it simple….especially when you are starting out.  Limit yourself to no more than 5 tasks for each time block.  I know I get overwhelmed if I feel like my to do list is getting too long!

  1. I’ve recently started to use a cleaning schedule – focusing on different things each day to try and keep on top of things. I don’t always stick tpo it, but it does help a bit. #twinklytuesday

  2. I feel like I could do with a better cleaning schedule! My top 3 things I have to do are keep the kitchen sides clean, unload and reload the dishwasher and sweep the floors! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

  3. It’s really hard to maintain a clean house and being a working mom at the same time. An ideal house cleaning process requires some serious efforts to determine the best result. I was simply confused on choosing the best strategy which could work effectively for me. I recently found your article more useful as a tool which could help me explore home cleaning planning ideas in this sector.

    • I’m so glad you found this helpful. I was becoming overwhelmed thinking about everything I was “supposed” to do to maintain a clean house. I found that when I wrote down just a few things that I felt like I needed to do and decided not worry about the rest of it…I was so much happier! We can’t do it all!

  4. Hi Carrine,
I love the ‘zone’ idea. My boys need to work in the house, too. Hmmp 😉 My top three things that I need to do every day includes 1) Dishwashing 2) Wiping the bathroom sink, floor, and toilet seat (because I’m a freak when it comes to our bathroom) I know. 3) Put things to where they should be, shoes used for the day, bags, toys, books etc. It’s a lot. It’s what I do every single day. Deep cleaning is scheduled every weekend.
    Cheers to working moms,
    Jessica
