I live in a house with 8 people.  Which means we have a lot of stuff…which creates clutter!  We have routines in place that keeps things (mostly) picked up…but sometimes it is easy to let things slide and things can pile up (quite literally!)  I’m always working on clearing the clutter!

I always seem to get into a decluttering mood at the beginning of the year and at the start of a school year…those times of the year feel like it’s time to make a fresh start to me.  These are 2 simple things that help me keep up with some of the clutter…(if only just a little!)

The Best Clutter Busting Routine For My Closet

I saw an idea several years ago that mentioned turning all the hangers in your closet backwards at the beginning of the year.  When you wore a piece of clothing then you turned the hanger the right way when you hung it back up.  The idea was that in June you were supposed to get rid of all the clothes that still had hangers facing backwards.  I did it!

Well…sort of!  I turned all my hangers backwards and turned them around when I wore that shirt (or whatever it was).  When the half-way point rolled around I wasn’t quite ready to get rid of everything that still had a backwards facing hanger…but I did get rid of a few things.  In November I took another look and got rid of a couple more things.

Now, to be honest…there are some things in my closet that never got their hangers turned around and I kept.  But…I still felt like it was a success…and I’ve done it for several years!

I love how it gives me an opportunity to quickly look at the clothes in my closet and evaluate whether or not I want to keep them!

Clutter Around the House

The second thing I do is to always have a box or a bag ready to throw stuff in for the thrift store.  I rarely have big chunks of time that I can devote to decluttering…but I often find 1-2 items as I am going about my day that we don’t need or want anymore.  It’s easy when I already have a designated spot for these things to go.

This method makes it easy for me to get rid of a lot during the year (as long as I can keep my husband and kids from going through the bags or boxes before I get it out of the house!)  I rarely miss anything I get rid of…and neither does my family!

Neither of these ideas are hard or overwhelming like so many organizational methods I’ve tried or read about!  These are just simple “clear the clutter” ideas that fit into my everyday life.

Benefits to Getting Rid of Clutter

I always feel a little bit lighter after dropping a load off at our local Goodwill.  I believe that getting rid of clutter is good for your mental and physical health.  I find that getting rid of clutter saves me time and energy because there is less to clean up.  Those are benefits that I want!

Make it Happen!

  • Go into your closet and turn all your hangers around (it doesn’t matter what time of year it is!)
  • Make a note on your calendar 6 months from now to get rid of the clothes that never got worn!
  • Get a donation bag or box and find a home for it (mine lives in my closet)

  1. The clutter drives me insane!! I did the backwards hanger thing too, and it was great! I didn’t get rid of too much, but it still made a huge difference. Plus I sold the stuff I got rid of on Swap.com, so the little bit of extra cash is a nice little incentive to really think about how badly you need things. 🙂

  2. I love the idea of having a bag just for thrift stuff. I just got rid of 4 bags of kids stuff and it felt sooooo good. I hate clutter too. Great tips!

  3. I have had periods when clutter was a problem. It seems to gather during the winter and I clear it in the spring.
I like the hanger tip, I think I will try it this year.
A rule I have for myself, is: One thing comes into the home, one thing has to go out of the home. This makes me hesitate a bit before buying something I don’t really need, thus reducing the chance of clutter.

  4. I love both of these ideas, especially turning the hangers backwards. Thanks for sharing these tips on Sunday’s Best linkup.
