I’ve been reading personal development books for years…one of the true classics is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Sean Covey.  There are so many wonderful gems in that book!  This title made me stop and consider what homemaking habits would lead to an effective home life.

I started thinking about how that title applied to my job as a homemaker.  What do I do…or what could I be doing to be a successful stay at home mom and homemaker?  And what does a successful homemaker look like?  What homemaking habits would help me?

To me a successful homemaker looks like someone who keeps her home running smoothly while having time to be present with her children or pursue her own interests….a nearly impossible task I know.  But there are some habits that can help!

7 Homemaking Habits

#1 Homemaking Habit

Live with a Vision:  Homemaking can be a repetitive, thankless job (laundry and dishes…anyone?).  It is up to me to look at the big picture and remember why I do what I do!

When I am consistent about reading my Mom Mission Statement every day…I am a better homemaker and a better mom because it helps remind me of what is really important.

#2 Homemaking Habit

Follow a Morning Routine:  I know some people think that routines are restrictive.  Mornings are the key to a productive day for me.

There are some activities that…if I don’t do them in the morning…it is highly unlikely that they will happen!  Scripture study and exercise are two prime examples!

#3 Homemaking Habit

Follow an Evening Routine:  As important as my morning routine is…if I’m going to have a great morning…it all starts the night before.  There are definately some things I can do to set myself up for success!

#4 Homemaking Habit

Plan Meals:  It’s something that happens several times a day…my people want to eat…they insist on it!  If I don’t have a plan…it makes them hangry and I get frustrated!

And for those days when the plan isn’t going to happen….having some super easy ideas can be a lifesaver!

#5 Homemaking Habit

Use a Cleaning Schedule:  I don’t like to clean…but since I’m not the only one who lives here I need to make sure we maintain some degree of cleanliness.

When I follow my Homemaking Routine I find I spend less time and mind energy getting the job done!  And everyone enjoys having things picked up.

#6 Homemaking Habit

Keep Learning:  If I just focused on cooking and cleaning and keeping the kids alive I would be incredibly bored.  There are so many ways to learn now…books, webinars, ecourses, podcasts.

Don’t neglect learning….plus you may even be able to spark an interest in your children about something you love!

#7 Homemaking Habit

Take Care of Themselves:  I have learned that I am a much happier homemaker and mother if I remember to take care of myself.

I have learned the hard way that playing the martyr doesn’t serve myself or my family well.

So while self care may have become a bit of a buzz word…there are many simple things you can do to take care of yourself.

Make it Happen!

  1. I definitely agree that homemaking can be a repetitive job that might tire everyone out. This has been the case for me who got tired of looking after my grandparents since I have other things to do and I can’t seem to balance the time between my priorities and looking after them. It might be better for me to just hire a professional homemaker who can assist them whenever I’m not around.
